Helping children have a little dignity

Back to School Event for Foster Children

Suitcases for New Beginnings has scheduled a Back-to-School Event for Foster Children on Saturday, August 16, at 10726 East State Hwy 76, Powersite, MO 65731. Children in foster care will receive a free backpack and school supplies. We will have vendors and games for kids to play, making it a fun time.

Imagine growing up without the love and support of family to guide you through life. That’s the reality for over 442,000 children in foster care in the US and over 9 million kids worldwide. Kids who, through no fault of their own, have found themselves in a system that tries as it might often fall short.
Kids who have had opportunities and a shot at a real future are taken away from them by the actions of others.

Kids need a chance at finding happiness and the love of family.

Suitcases for New Beginnings is a charity dedicated to giving duffle bags to every child entering the foster care system.

MOST ARE GIVEN A TRASH BAG TO CARRY THEIR BELONGINGS.

Children and teens enter foster care through no fault of their own because they have been abused, neglected, or abandoned and are unable to continue living safely with their families. Children have been neglected and often feel like they don’t matter. Some do not own a toothbrush and have never worn a new pair of pajamas.

Unfortunately, Social Services does not have the financial means to purchase suitcases to pack a child’s belongings before being brought to a foster home. Social Services must use trash bags if they do not have donated duffle bags. It is horrific enough that a child has been abused or neglected, but then to have all of their belongings placed into a trash bag, which places a feeling of worthlessness on the child. It makes them feel like garbage.

We are a 501(c) 3 organization in Forsyth, Missouri, focusing on Children in Foster Care. Our Specific focus is on bringing dignity, love, and support to foster children and families in our community. We not only have our Foster Closet Thrift Store, but we will also have other Programs for Children in Foster care, such as Kids Time, Work Study, and Lead the Way.

Since 2020, we have been helping children in foster care by giving duffle bags with personal items to children ages 0-18 as they enter foster care.

Kids Time

We will do crafts, read a story, and complete a social skills worksheet once a month.

Work Study

We will hire teenage foster children to work part-time so they can get work experience and learn responsibilities.

Lead the Way

Lead the Way is a program designed for older foster youth ages 15+. It provides education, resources, and life skills, including home management and financial fundamentals, and assists with studying for a driver's permit.

Providing Reliable Mentorship and Stability for Kids in Foster Care

I know you share our commitment to supporting children in our community, especially those in foster care who face unique challenges and uncertainties.

Children in foster care often lack the stability and support that many of us take for granted. They may move from home to home, facing disruptions in relationships and routines that can have lasting effects on their well-being. That's why reliable mentorship and stability are so crucial for these children.

Imagine being a child who has experienced trauma and upheaval, only to find themselves in a new environment with unfamiliar faces. Now imagine having a consistent mentor who is there to provide guidance, support, and a sense of stability through it all. That's the difference you can make by becoming a Stabilizer.

Our Stabilizer Monthly Giving Program ensures that children in foster care have access to reliable mentorship and stability, regardless of the challenges they may face. Your monthly donations will provide these children with the consistent support they need to thrive and succeed.

Will you join us in providing reliable mentorship and stability for kids in foster care?

Cheryl’s Story

I have dedicated myself to this project because I know what it's like to be placed in a foster home. Walking in a strange place with people you don’t know and carrying some personal items in a trash bag is one of the scariest things that could happen to a child. It also makes you feel unwanted, unloved, and thrown away like garbage. I have been a foster child, a high school graduate, a wife, a mom, a college graduate, a school teacher, and now a businesswoman. Dedicated to helping Children in foster care. Just because you are a foster child doesn’t mean you can’t succeed in life.
